ACAPULCO, Mexico -- David Ferrer and Andy Murray, the top two seeded players in the Mexican Open, advanced to the second round on Tuesday while American and third-seeded John Isner became the first major casualty of the tournament, losing 7-6 (4) 7-6 (5) to Croatias Ivo Karlovic. Mats Hummels Jersey . Ferrer, the favourite in Acapulco, had a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin while Murray overcame a sluggish start and claimed a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Pablo Andujar, from Spain. "I had a difficult start, it was 10 minutes in the match and I was down 5-0, but I started to play more aggressively to get the win and hopefully I can have a good week here", Murray said. "The first set was extremely challenging, he was dictating the points, but later on he was getting tired and put the pressure on him". Murray, who played for the first time ever in Latin America, lost his first three service games and fell into a 5-0 hole, but came back strongly to set up a match against Joao Sousa of Portugal. "I played Joao once in Australia, he was new on the tour then and he has improved. Hes playing good tennis, hes good on clay and on hard courts", added Murray. "He plays similar to Pablo, hopefully I can play aggressively from the start." In the round-of-16, Ferrer, who is trying to win on Mexican soil for the fourth time in his career, will play Spanish compatriot Feliciano Lopez. "I..m not thinking about the final, Im only in the second round", Ferrer said. "Now Im only thinking about playing my best tennis against Feliciano Lopez, he..s a good player I need to give my best to beat him". Ferrer, who now has a 4-0 record against Kukushkin, is coming off an impressive run in the past two weeks of the ATP tour, winning the Buenos Aires tournament and reaching the semifinals in Rio de Janeiro last week. "Playing in Buenos Aires was not in my plans", said Ferrer who replaced his countryman Rafael Nadal in Argentina. "Im tired, but I will not be making any excuses, I need to take a rest now and get well for the rest of the tournament". Earlier, Karlovic served 15 aces to Isner fired eight in a match between two of the games biggest servers. "Im very disappointed," a visibly upset Isner said after the match. "I wanted to do well in here, is a good surface for me, but I played against a guy who played well against me". The 2.11-meter (6-foot-11) Karlovic now has a 3-2 career record against the 2.08-meter (6-foot-10) Isner, whos ranked 13th in the world. Sousa of Portugal came back to defeat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. South Africas Kevin Anderson downed Stephane Robert of France 6-2, 7-6 (7) and will next play Americas Sam Querrey. Latvias Gulbis won his fifth career title last week in Marsella. Bissonnette left the bench after teammate Rostislav Klesla was injured on a hit by Los Angeles Kings forward Jordan Nolan. Klesla had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher and suffered a concussion. Bissonnette was suspended because he violated Rule 70.10, which states: "The first player to leave the players or penalty bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended without pay for the next 10 regular league and/or playoff games of his team." He was also given a game misconduct Sunday night. Willie Horton Jersey. The suspension will cost Bissonnette US$37,820.51, and he will be eligible to make his season debut Oct. 24 when the Coyotes play at the Kings. Nolan was not suspended for the hit, which NHL vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan called an "open-ice body check." "The hit was punishing and resulted in Klesla suffering an injury," Shanahan said in a video confirming no supplemental discipline. "However in delivering it, Nolan broke no National Hockey League rules." Shanahan explained that Nolan did not leave his feet and did not launch himself at Klesla or target the defencemans head. Cheney, WA (SportsNetwork. Chukwuma Okorafor Steelers Jersey .com) - Hes baaack. Oh, how ever. Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. returned to the lineup for the first time since being injured on Oct. 3, passing for 399 yards and four touchdowns to help the fifth-ranked Eagles defeat No. 11 Montana, 36-26, before 11,339 in a key Big Sky Conference game on Saturday. Adams broke two metatarsal bones in his right foot and missed four straight games. He returned to complete 24-of-36 pass attempts. Vernon was gutsy, Eastern coach Beau Baldwin said. He definitely wasnt 100 percent in terms of being able to move and get out of things like he usually can, but he was still was able to buy time, see things, throw from the pocket and make a lot of plays. I guarantee his foot is hurting him, but it was a very impressive performance by Vernon. With the redshirt junior again guiding Eastern Washingtons high-powered offense, the Eagles (9-2, 6-1) built a 33-10 lead midway through the third quarter. Just like last years matchup at Montana, the Grizzlies (6-4, 4-2) rallied back into the game, pulling within 33-26 before EWU put the win away on Tyler McNannays 34-yard field goal with 28 seconds left. The Eagles have sole possession of first place in the crowded Big Sky race. Adams spread the wealth. Cooper Kupp (eight receptions, 134 yards), Shaq Hill (seven receptions, 103 yards), Nic Sblendorio and Kendrick Bourne all caught receptions. Linebacker Ronnie Hamlin had nine tackles to give him 440 in his career, a new EWU record. Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson was 29-for-50 for 447 yards and three interceptions and two interceptions. Jamal Jones caught nine passes for 139 yards and a touchdown. Chukwuma Okorafor Jersey . Atletico Madrid beat Valladolid 3-0 as Diego Simeones side and Barcelona opened up a three-point advantage over Real Madrid before it plays at Getafe on Sunday. Barcelonas big win, which included the scoring return of Neymar after a monthlong injury absence, came three days before it visits Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. While two of the leagues top teams thrilled their fans, a device thrown onto the pitch at El Madrigal released noxious smoke, forcing the match to be temporarily interrupted in the 87th minute with Celta winning 1-0 after Fabian Orellanas goal four minutes before. Fans and players streamed out of the stadium to avoid the irritating effects of the smoke. After a 20-minute delay, the game was restarted and Celtas Manuel "Nolito" Agudo scored from a free kick in the 90th. Villarreal president Fernando Roig said police were looking for the person who threw the bomb. He said the device released tear gas. Barcelona punished a visiting Rayo side intent on trying to deploy a similar precision passing attack and was unfortunate to head into halftime only up 2-0 from Adrianos second-minute opener and Messis lob in the 36th. The Camp Nou hosts found their finishing touch in the second half, as Messi struck again before assisting Alexis Sanchez, with Pedro Rodriguez and Neymar also adding goals. Messis double left him with 228 goals in league play, giving him one more than Alfredo Di Stefano and tying him with Raul Gonzalez as the competitions third all-time leading scorer. The 26-year-old Messi reached the mark in 263 league games, while Raul needed 550. Former Athletic Bilbao star Telmo Zarra holds the record with 251 goals in 277 games in the 1940s-50s. "Messi will surpass all the records he sets out to breeak," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. James Washington Steelers Jersey. "He will lose count. We are in the presence of a kind of player that only comes round every 30 or 40 years." The Argentina forward appears to have regained his full fitness following a two-month injury layoff, with four goals in his last two games. Atletico likewise dominated its home match after Raul Garcia scored three minutes in from a set-piece and seconds later passed for Diego Costa to record his 21st league goal, one less than leader Cristiano Ronaldo. Diego Godin scored in the 74th minute of Atleticos placid victory that saw goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and striker David Villa return from injury absences. Atleticos win ended a run of three straight losses before it visits AC Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League. Rayo and Valladolid, meanwhile, remained in the relegation zone along with Real Betis. In Valencia, Levante extended its undefeated streak to six rounds and provisionally rose into seventh place thanks to its stout defence and David Barrals solo effort to beat visiting Almeria 1-0. Adriano has several long-range goals for Barcelona, and the Brazilian defender struck again from outside the box to get Barcelona going just moments after the whistle. Rayos insistence to try and work the ball up the pitch with short passes played into Barcelonas pressure and resulted in a slew of chances for the defending champions. Cesc Fabregas intercepted an errant pass and spotted Messi completely unmarked to chip Martinez. Messi found Alexis to beat Martinez in the 53rd and tally his team-leading 15th league goal of the season, and three minutes later Pedro tapped in a short pass from Fabregas, who was played clear by Andres Iniestas deft back-heeled flick. Messi took his second goal in the 68th with a left-footed shot just inside the upright, and Neymar capped the rout in the 89th after he came on as a substitute. The Brazil striker, who had been out since hurting his right ankle on Jan. 16, unleashed a long-range strike that sailed in over Martinez. SAN DIEGO - Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers practiced on Friday as San Diego prepares for Sundays game against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs. Stefano Sturaro Jersey . Flowers left last Sundays 31-28 win over the Oakland Raiders with a groin injury. Friday was the first time Flowers tested it this week. I just moved around a little bit, did the individual drills and got through them, said Flowers, whos listed as questionable for Sunday. Coach Mike McCoy was encouraged with Flowers progress. He did a nice job, McCoy said. But Flowers said he wont know until Sunday morning if hes able to compete. If Im out there that means Im good enough to play, said Flowers, who missed the Sept. 14 game with the same injury. If not, I wasnt able to go. Flowers, who leads the Chargers with two interceptions, played in Kansas City before signing as a free agent last off-season. He was looking forward to battling his former squad. I thought it would be fun, Flowers said. I never got a chance to play an old team before, so definitely it would be fun to go out there and play against the guys I played with for six years. But what trumps that are Sundays stakes. The first-place Chargers (5-1) could drop Kansas City (2-3) 3 1-2 games off the AFC West lead with their sixth straight win. I didnt have it circled, but its a big game, Flowers said. Its a division opponent and we got to make it happen on Sunday. Linebacker Jerry Attaochu (hamstring) didnt practice this week and is listed as doubtful. Designated as out are running backs Ryan Mathews (knee) and Donald Butler (concussion) and linebacker Manti Teo (foot). Miralem Pjanic Jersey . Not this time. More than 48 hours after leaving the bench to enter the line brawl between his Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres to come to the defence of teammate Phil Kessel, a contrite Clarkson accepted his automatic, 10-game suspension even while justifying his actions. "Im a grown man and Im going to take this one for what I did and be held accountable," Clarkson said. "Im not appealing it. Im going to take it, and Im going to work hard to get back." Clarkson broke his silence after playing in the Leafs 3-2 pre-season loss to the Ottawa Senators, apologizing for not addressing the situation before. The 29-year-old right-winger said he wanted to wait to get official word from the NHL about the suspension and then didnt want to be a distraction on a game day. It was another case of Clarkson trying to do what he figured was right for the team. When he did that Sunday night upon seeing Sabres tough guy John Scott going after Kessel, it got him into this mess that will cost him almost $270,000. "I think I sometimes make decisions with my heart, not my head," Clarkson said. "I saw a teammate that I felt was in trouble, and my reaction was to help. You can have many different opinions, but that was my mind-set going in. I was just going there to go to help and settle things down. That was the intent." Teammates admired Clarksons intent, so much so that he said everyone in the locker room expressed support for sticking up for Kessel. There was no hesitation in leaving the bench to leap to the aid of someone Clarkson has only called a teammate since July. It was simply a gut instinct, albeit a very costly one. "Its like if you have a little brother and you feel like hes in trouble or you feel like theres a situation you can get out and help," Clarkson said. "That was the feeling I had in my belly. I had feeling to do something, and Ive got to pay the consequences for it. That was the feeling, it was to go out aand to try and help or to calm down a situation and now Ill serve my 10 games and come back better for it. Blaise Matuidi Jersey. " Clarkson never conceded regret about a "split-second" decision. He never said the result would have been different if he had to replay the incident over again. "The part that sucks is that Im missing these games," he said. "But at the same time I think defending teammates is something thats just in me. Its what Ive done my whole life and I think that the 10 games thing obviously is tough to swallow, but when theres rules out there in place, youve got to abide by them." Coach Randy Carlyle, whom Clarkson said has been "supportive" since the brawl happened and the suspension was handed down, called the rationale "more of an old-time hockey explanation." Clarkson brings the kind of tools that make him a throwback player, but this wasnt what the Leafs signed up for when they gave him a seven-year, US$36.75-million contract. But Carlyle said earlier Tuesday that he can sense the "burning desire" Clarkson has to make a difference. Its one he wont be able to do on the ice until Torontos 11th game Oct. 25 at the Columbus Blue Jackets. "Ill say sorry to the fans or anybody whos disappointed, but I was going out there and what I felt like (was) my teammates in here are first to me," Clarkson said. "Thats whats gotten me to where I am in my career, thats why I believe Im here. I think thats just the person I am. If anyone was in trouble in here, I would try to go to help and that was what I did." Until he can make his regular-season debut, Clarkson resigned himself to being "the biggest cheerleader" he can be. Oct. 25 feels "very far" away. "This is one of the toughest things Ive been through in my career, especially being excited to be somewhere, just getting used to things," he said. "But no one in life is perfect, and when you make a mistake youve got to live up to it and deal with it." For the first time in more than 30 years, Canada officially has a medal drought at the World Junior Hockey Championship. St. Louis Blues Gear . Canada dropped the bronze medal game to Russia by a score of 2-1 on Sunday, marking the first time it has failed to win a medal in back-to-back tournaments since the Program of Excellences inception in 1982. Russia stormed out to an early 2-0 lead over Canada on Sunday thanks to first period goals from Mikhail Grigorenko and Eduard Gimatov. It would provide the basis for a lead Russia would never surrender. Canada would get on the board mid-way through the third with defenceman Josh Morrissey giving the Canadian team some life, but it would not be enough as the Russians would beat Canada to claim bronze for a second straight year. Andrei Vasilevski turned away 28 of the 29 shots Canada threw at him on Sunday, improving his all-time World Junior record to 11-4 over the course of three tournaments. He was named Russias Player of the Game. Aaron Ekblad was named Canadas Player of the Game. Canadian goalkeeper Zach Fucale took over as starter after Canadas preliminary round loss to the Czech Republic and stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced in the semifinal. The Montreal Canadiens draft pick expressed disappointment with the result despite his strong play. "This is absolutely not about me," he told TSN in a post-game interview. "This is just about the team winning and we came here for a reason and we didnt get it done." Canada has now gone five tournaments without bringing home World Junior gold. Their last gold came in 2009 when they claimed their fifth consecutive tournament, winning on home ice in Ottawa. The loss sets Canada up for a tough group at the 2015 World Juniors that will be hosted in Toronto and Montreal. With the fourth-place finish, Canada is set to once again be drawn with the United States. They will also be joined by defending gold medalists Finland as well as Slovakia and Germany. "For guys coming back next year its good motivation," said forward Curtis Lazar, who finished third in team scoring with three goals and four assists in seven games. "Its Canada, you want to get back on top. Its a tough tournament to win, thats the bottom line," Lazar added. This Canadian team has 11 players that would be eligible to play in next years tournament, including Lazar. However, 17-year-olds Sam Reinhart and Aaron Ekblad are projected to go first and second in the 2014 NHL Draft and their availability for next years team would be questionable. It was a tough tournament for Canada, as the team surrendered the first goal in all but one of their games. But the bronze medal game saw a better overall effort for Canada than the one they put forth in the semifinal loss to Finland. "In this particular game you could make a case that Team Canada deserved a better fate but in the bigger picture of where they finished in the tournament I dont think you could say they deserved anything more than what they got, which is a fourth-place finish," TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie said. "In a difficult game to play, they had more emotion, they had more commitment and more chances to score and generated a lot more than they did in the semifinals against Finland, where they generated only three shots in the third period," McKenzie added. The tournament also saw head coach Brent Sutters perfect World Junior record shattered after Canada lost its preliminary round game to the Czech Republic 5-4 in a shootout. Sutter had gone 6-0 and won gold in both his previous coaching tenures in the 2005 tournament in Vancouver and Kelowna and the 2006 tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota. McKenzie believes Canadas troubles may have less to do with Canadas on-ice personnel and more to do with the mental approach the team takes to the high-profile competition, especially the knockout games. "Its more along the lines of [being] terrified to lose than [they] are determined to win," McKenzie observed of three years worth of semifinal defeats. Fucale would also acknowledge the weight of high expectations after the defeat. "Here its all about results," said the 18-year-old. "Canada expects more, we expect more from ourselves and you know we didnt get it done." Scottie Upshall Jersey .I get texts: Do you know Drake? Have you met Drake? Its the first-place Blue Jays against the team closest to them in the American League East. Toronto enters the series with a four-and-a-half game lead on the Yankees. Its another chance, the second of what will be as many as six, to wave goodbye to New Yorks future Hall of Fame shortstop, Derek Jeter. Here in New York, the dulcet voice of the late, great public address announcer, Bob Sheppard, brings No. 2 to the plate. Jose Reyes is back in New York, too. He made his name over in Queens playing for the Mets. R.A. Dickey is here but wont pitch. He won the Cy Young award two seasons ago on the other side of the city. Oh, and dont forget about the Blue Jays rookies mound opponent on this Tuesday: a rookie himself, technically, the Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka, whos dominated the early days of his major league career like he dominated for years back home. Then there is Marcus Stroman. Its strange that this, essentially a homecoming for a young man raised in the Long Island town of Medford, is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Hes the 23-year-old who stunned general manager Alex Anthopoulos, blowing his bubble gum in the middle of his windup. The kid seems born for the spotlight, even if it will shine more brightly on others. "Im usually pretty good with dealing with things like that," Stroman said on Sunday. "I dont let anything get to me or get me overly excited or kind of get me out of my game. Im fine. Im in a good place mentally. I feel good going into it. I have kind of an off-day just to hang out with friends in the city and then it will be Game on Tuesday." Medford is a sleepy town, according to Stroman, more than an hour from New York City. Its closer to the upscale Hamptons, a drive of about 45 minutes. Medford has one high school, Patchoggue-Medford High School, which Stroman attended before moving on to college at Duke University. Tony Twist Jersey. The town will awaken this evening. Many of its inhabitants, in fact, will venture to Yankee Stadium to watch the hometown boy pitch. Stroman has purchased up to 70 tickets for close family and friends. He said hes been told by another 50 or 60 people theyve bought ducats. Hell have a throng of about 130 people here rooting him on. "Anytime you have an opportunity to pitch in front of a bunch of family and friends, its exciting," said Stroman. "I should have a lot of – a bunch of people texting me, bunch of friends from high school, college, a lot of people reaching out to me saying theyre going to be at the game so thats always exciting to pitch in front of people whove been there along the way." Stroman is 3-1 in his first year in the big leagues, 2-1 as a starter. Hes gone six innings in each of his first three starts, losing his last outing against the Twins. In two of those appearances, including the Minnesota defeat, he didnt walk a batter. He has impressed with his fastball. His breaking stuff, particularly his curveball, has baffled opposing hitters. Hes developing his changeup. Hes not developing confidence. He already has it. His coaches brag about it. "I certainly dont see him as a guy whos going to nibble and pitch around guys," said pitching coach Pete Walker. "Hes definitely on the attack. His walks have been down and I would like to think that thats going to continue with him. He certainly trusts his stuff. Theres no doubt about that." Growing up, Stroman went to Yankees games at the old stadium and saw the Mets at Shea. He didnt cheer for either team. He admired players. Like most native New Yorkers, he watched Jeter in awe. On Tuesday night, hell pitch to Jeter. He doesnt know what to expect. "I cant even tell you," said Stroman. MINSK, Belarus -- Defending champion Sweden edged Norway 2-1 Tuesday for its third straight victory at the hockey world championships. Mike Gesicki Jersey . Linus Klasen was in front of the net to knock in the winner off a pass from Gustav Nyquist 7:18 into the final period for the Swedish comeback. "I just tried to break through to the net and then went around and tried to put it backdoor for Klasen and he was able to put it in," Nyquist said. Sweden remains the only unbeaten team in Group A. It leads with eight points from three games, followed by Canada with seven points and Norway with six. In other games, Finland blanked Germany 4-0 in Group B and Denmark beat Italy 4-1 in Group A for their first victories. Sondre Olden put Norway 1-0 ahead on a breakaway in the second half before Joakim Lindstrom tied it for Sweden on a power play. "It was a tough game," said Nyquist, a Detroit Red Wings forward. "They were tight on us, they had a lot of guys back and we had to go through five guys the whole time. We didnt create enough chances thats something we got to work on." Added Norway defenceman Jonas Holos: "We battled hard again, but theyre better than us." In another Group B game, defenceman Arturs Kulda scored twice and Juris Stals netted the decisive goal 3:22 into the third period to lift Latvia past Kazakhstan 5-4 for its second win. After losses to Latvia and Russia, Finland finally found its stride. Petri Kontiola and Jarkko Immonens first-period goals gave the Finns a 2-0 lead before Olli Palola and Leo Komarov scored 30 seconds apart in the second. "Maybe its a bit of a turning point. Its certainly good to get a smile back on our faces," Kontiola said. Goaltender Pekka Rinne made 20 saves for the shutout. Latvia has six points in Group B, Finland has three, Germany five and Kazakhstan one. Jannik Hansen scored short-handed for Denmark. Jesper Jensen and Emil Kristensen netted one each before Kim Staal added the last into an empty net. Denmark next plays Canada on Thursday. "If this tournament has proved anything its that anybody can beat anybody," Hansen said about Denmarks hopes to advance to the quarterfinals. "If you have a fortunate day and couple of bounces, anything can happen." Diego Kostner scored for Italy. "Tactically, defensively we played a sound, solid game" Italy coach Tom Pokel said. "So it was a tough one to swallow today." Denmark and Italy have three points each in Group A. Jerome Baker Dolphins Jersey . Mixing a fastball that topped 95 mph with his effective slider, the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander struck out 11 and allowed three hits over seven innings in a 4-0 victory Monday night to snap Milwaukees nine-game winning streak. Lynn (3-0) frustrated the Brewers all night. He left Carlos Gomez twisting in the batters box on swings and misses. He made Jonathan Lucroy, a .357 hitter, whiff badly on a fastball low in the zone in the second and froze Scooter Gennett on a heater outside. "Location. He was making good pitches early on and it looked like he had a little more life," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo shot in the second off Brewers starter Matt Garza, and Jon Jay had a three-run homer to the right field corner in the sixth. Reliever Carlos Martinez tossed two scoreless innings to finish off the surprising Brewers, who still have the majors best record at 10-3. Manager Ron Roenicke said he didnt think Garza (0-2) had his best stuff, yet Garza kept pace with Lynn until running into trouble in the sixth. Allen Craig reached on a fielders choice with two outs and Peralta singled to set up Jays homer off a hanging breaking ball. Until then, the Brewers seemed as though they were close to getting out of the jam after throwing out a runner at home and retiring a runner trying to advance to third for the second out. "I felt we had momentum after we had the tag at home ... and then (Jays homer) was a backbreaker," Garza said. "But were fine. Well come back and well start a new (streak) tomorrow." Lynn cooled off a Brewers team that was off to its best start since opening the 1987 season with 13 straight wins. Milwaukees best hope to score came in the fifth after No. 8 hitter Logan Schafer doubled to right with two outs to put runners at second and third. But that brought Garza, a career .094 hitter, to the plate and he struck out on three pitches. Ottherwise, the Brewers didnt get another runner past second. Daniel Kilgore Dolphins Jersey. . Lynn boasted a career 2.53 ERA in 10 games against the Brewers coming in, and his mastery of Milwaukee continued. "He throws the nice breaking ball and he usually keeps the ball down well," Roenicke said. "Every time Ive seen the guy, hes tough." With Lynn in control, about the only other drama provided by the Cardinals was when leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter was ejected in the fifth after apparently saying something to umpire Bob Davidson following a called third strike. "Matt didnt like what he saw; the umpire didnt like Matts opinion of what he saw. He said something to Matt, Matt returned something -- there was no foul language -- but the umpire had heard enough," Matheny said. "We were barking the majority of the game. "Hopefully theres no follow-up on that. Checking out the pitch, it wasnt a pitch he should be swinging at. Thats frustrating. You cant take emotions out of this game." Garza allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out six in seven innings. Rookie reliever Wei-Chung Wang, a Rule 5 pick, pitched a scoreless ninth in his big league debut. NOTES: Cardinals C Yadier Molina got a day off after catching the first 12 games of the season. ... Injured 2B Mark Ellis played his first game on a rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Memphis. "He didnt have any issues and felt good afterward, which was the main thing," Matheny said. "Hes on the right track to joining us here soon." ... Catch a doubleheader of September baseball action on TSN2 tonight. Maurice Richard Jersey . First, tied for top spot in the AL Central, division rivals go head-to-head when the Detroit Tigers host the Kansas City Royals. Then, the NL Wild Card-leading San Franciso Giants entertain the Arizona Diamondbacks. All the action gets underway at 7pm et/4pm pt. Royals at Tigers - 7pm et/4pm pt (TSN2) Rick Porcello has gotten the better of James Shields twice already this season. With a chance to move past Kansas City for first place in the American League Central, Porcello will try to make it a hat trick on Wednesday evening as the Detroit Tigers go for a three-game sweep of the Royals. Porcello is 15-10 with a 3.30 earned run average this season, but yielded six runs -- three earned -- and 11 hits over 6 2/3 frames of a loss to the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 31. The right-hander followed up with another setback to San Francisco on Friday, charged with six runs, one of them unearned, and 10 hits over a mere three innings of work. "It was a combination of some good pitches that got hit and some bad pitches that got hit, and they capitalized on all of them," Porcello said. The 25-year-old has allowed only three runs over 14 innings in a pair of wins over the Royals this year, defeating Shields both times. Shields goes up against Porcello again tonight and is 0-2 with a 5.49 ERA in three meetings with the Tigers overall on the year. Shields has won four of his last five decisions and pitched a gem last time out to get a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees on Friday. The righty gave up three hits and struck out six over 8 1/3 scoreless innings, retiring 11 in a row before allowing a one-out single in the ninth. "Any time you face this team its going to be a grind," Shields said. "To be able to pitch like that and save our bullpen for our road trip was nice." The 32-year-old Shields is 13-7 this season with a 3.23 ERA. Kansas City has lost 11 of 15 to Detroit this season, and allowed the Tigers to pull into a tie atop the AL Central by losing the first two games of this series. The Royals had won five of six overall coming in. Max Scherzer, who was roughed up for a career high-tying 10 runs in a meeting with Kansas City on June 17, held the Royals to one run over 6 2/3 frames in last nights 4-2 Detroit win. Rajai Davis smacked a two-run homer and J.D. Martinez added a solo shot in the triumph, Detroits third in a row overall. "This is a huge series and were getting huge wins," Scherzer said. "Were playing great as a team and everybody is contributing." The Royals nearly came back, putting their first two runners on base against Joe Nathan in the ninth, but the closer struck out Alex Gordon, picked off pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson at second base and fanned Salvador Perez to notch his 30th save of the season. Jason Vargas surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for Kansas City. "Two mistake pitches, both of them in the middle of the plate," Vargas said of his two homers allowed. While Kansas City closer Greg Holland remains out due to a tight right triceps, Detroit reliever Joakim Soria is expected to be activated off the disabled list before tonights game. Soria, acquired from Texas on July 23, has been out since suffering a strained oblique on Aug. 9 and will provide a boost to the bullpen bridge to closer Nathan. Diamondbacks at Giants - 10pm et/7pm pt (TSN2) The San Francisco Giants continue their push toward the postseason on Wednesday when they play the second of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. San Francisco drew first blood in this series on Tuesday, as Yusmeiro Petit tossed another complete game against his former team, going the distance in the Giants 5-1 win. Petit was masterful, throwing an incredibly efficient 68 of his 84 pitches for strikes. The 29-year-old kept his pitch count low despite striking out a season high-tying nine batters. "Hes been a lift for us," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He was hitting his spots tonight." Petit (5-3) was charged with a run on four hits in his first complete game since just over a year ago. He tossed a one-hitter against the D-backs on Sept. 6, 2013. The pitching performance overshadowed a career-best 5-for-5 effort at the plate from Joe Panik. Angel Pagan went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Buster Posey drove in two runs for San Francisco, which has won seven straight games at home and pulled within 2 1/2 games of Los Angeles for the NL West lead. The Dodgers lost to San Diego Tuesday night. San Francisco is currently first in the NL wild card standings. Panik, Pagan, Gregor Blanco and Petit accounted for all 12 Giants hits. San Francisco chased D-backs starter Wade Miley (7-11) after just two innings. Miley fell to 0-3 over his last five starts after giving up three runs on five hits and four walks. "I felt really, really good," Miley said. "Thats the most frustrating part. I felt really good in the bullpen. Just couldnt execute my fastball. Couldnt throw it close to where I wanted to throw it." Heading to the hill for the Giants on Wednesday will be righty Ryan Vogelsong, who is 8-10 with a 4.06 ERA. Vogelsong absorbed the loss last Wednesday in Colorado and looked bad in doing so, as he was rocked for eight runs and 10 hits in just five-plus innings. "Its an adventure out there," Vogelsong said. "The ball flies, especially during the day. Then every kind of bloop shot falls in because guys have to play so deep. Their infield grass is really quick, too. So it seems like a lot of ground balls get through that dont at a lot of places. Put that together and youre looking at a long day." Vogelsong has faced the D-backs 19 times (13 starts) and is 3-5 with a 4.67 ERA. Arizona, meanwhile, will counter with righty Josh Collmenter, who has won his last two decisions. Collmenter beat the San Diego Padres last Wednesday, holding them to a run and five hits over seven innings, as he improved to 10-7 to go along with a 3.81 ERA. He has allowed just two runs over his last three starts, spanning 21 2/3 innings. "Ive been able to locate, move the ball in and out and mix pitches up," Collmenter said. "Thats my game plan. Just trying to force contact. I dont want to be a guy that walks guys and gets behind in the count. Today I was a little more erratic than the last couple, but I was still able to make some pitches when I needed to and guys made some good plays for me." Collmenter is 5-1 lifetime versus the Giants with a 3.74 ERA in 16 games (5 starts). San Francisco is 9-5 this season against Arizona. Jonathan Drouin Jersey . LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Looking back, Bobby Petrino said the first of his many mistakes in recent years was leaving Louisville, which provided the first of several head coaching opportunities on the college and professional levels. Upon returning Thursday to the Cardinals after seven years, Petrino promised his second stint would be permanent because this was always his destination -- even with collegiate stops at Arkansas and Western Kentucky and a 13-game foray with the NFLs Atlanta Falcons. Petrino returns to a Louisville program that has changed a lot since he left, one thats gearing up to join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season with a home game against newly-crowned champion Florida State. The coach insisted that hes a changed person as well as he enters the next -- and hopefully final -- stop in his career. "Its great to be back home," Petrino said during a sometimes-emotional news conference. "Its really unbelievable to get the opportunity to come back here. For (wife) Becky, and (children) Nick and Bobby and Katie, this is our home and were excited to be able to come back." Petrino coached Western Kentucky to an 8-4 record last season in his only year with the team. He led the Cardinals to a 41-9 mark from 2003-06 including a BCS Orange Bowl victory his final season. He succeeds Charlie Strong, who left last weekend after four years to accept the Texas job. Petrino inherits a team coming off a 12-1 finish and is 23-3 the past two seasons with two bowl wins. Petrino received a seven-year contract with a base annual salary of $3.5 million. It includes a $10 million buyout for leaving that decreases after four years. But the well-travelled coach said that will not be necessary because this is his "destination job." Petrino is 83-30 as a college coach. His record includes a 34-17 mark at Arkansas that ended amid scandal in April 2012. He came to the Razorbacks after a 3-10 season in 2007 with the Falcons that ended with the coach announcing his departure by letters left at the players lockers. "I made mistakes, both professionally and personally, and thats something Im not going to do again," Petrino said. "The first mistake was leaving Louisville, and Im hoping that the fans and everybody will forgive me. Im more energized, more excited than Ive ever been." Petrino had been mentioned for the Louisville job almost from the moment Strong left for the Longhorns, but the coach said he became aware of the opening only after Cardinals athletic director Tom Jurich approached WKU athletic director Todd Stewart for permission to interview him. Jurich said he was angry at Petrino early in the Tuesday interview because of the coachs behaviour in his previous Louiisville stint, one that included player disciplinary issues. Dominic Moore Jersey. The AD also said he was mad at Petrino for leaving after the Orange Bowl win for the pros, though he acknowledged the coach was honest about his interest in the job. On Sunday, Jurich said he and Petrino had previously resolved their differences. But he wanted to see if the coach had truly changed as he has professed since Arkansas fired him for "a pattern of misleading behaviour" following a motorcycle accident in which he revealed his mistress was a passenger. Jurich came away convinced he was getting a different man from the one who left, reinforcing his belief that Petrino was the right fit for the Cardinals. "If it was the same Bobby that was here 10 years ago, I wasnt interested," said Jurich, adding that he kept coming back to Petrino as he went through a list of seven finalists. "He is definitely a changed person." While Petrinos critics have been skeptical about his commitment, public sentiment for his hiring has been mostly favourable on sports talk radio, online polls and social media. Petrino has been contrite since the embarrassing matter and reiterated Thursday he has been humbled by his experiences. Asked how he would quell skepticism, the coach said, "the thing you do is just show (it). I have a sign in the locker room that says its a show-me world." Petrino is already off and running on his staff. A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that UAB coach Garrick McGee is stepping down and has agreed to become Petrinos offensive co-ordinator. The new Cardinals coach added that he will retain defensive line coach Clint Hurtt, penalized in October by the NCAA for violations committed as a Miami (Fla.) assistant. Louisvilles hiring of the offence-minded Petrino excited Cardinals players, such as leading rusher Dominique Brown, because of the potential of maintaining a high-powered unit Strong left behind. He acknowledged there were questions about his commitment but said those doubts disappeared after the coach met with players. "There were a couple of on the fence, but now all the players are convinced," Brown said. "We knew what we had while he was here, a top-10 offence. He had a good track record while he was here. I knew he liked to use big backs like Michael Bush. I was kind of worried, but now we are all convinced." Petrino said he was excited to get started with his second go-round with Louisville. "Its certainly a privilege to see how everything has moved, and now were going into the ACC," he said. "Its a great challenge to see the schedule we have coming up, and I cant wait to play that schedule." NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators have gotten off to a good start without Pekka Rinne. Robin Ventura Jersey . Craig Smith scored at 4:43 of overtime to give the Predators a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. Shea Weber and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Nashville, which has won three of four. Anthony Peluso and Blake Wheeler scored for Winnipeg, which has lost three of four. Late in overtime, David Legwand picked up a loose puck in the Winnipeg zone and sent a pass to Smith at the left faceoff dot, where he hammered a one-timer past Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who had 30 saves. "I felt Leggy made a good play, he put it on a tee," Smith said. "The emphasis in this room is to shoot the puck and we did a good job of creating chances. I was the finishing touch right there." Tied at 1 entering the third period, Mike Fisher sent a shot on goal from the right boards. Hornqvist picked up the rebound in the high slot and fired a shot by Pavelec for his fourth goal of the season at 6:04 of the third. "Our second goal was a controlled breakout sort of setting," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We got Fisher wide and he hammered it at the net. We got two whacks at it, and the second one went in the net and that is shooting to create." Hornqvist leads the Predators in goals this season. With 3:01 left in the third, Wheeler skated through the slot and converted the long rebound off a Zach Bogosian shot. "I think we did a lot of good things," Wheeler said. "We came out and had a really good start. In the first 10 minutes, we were all over them, kind of let them off the hook a little bit, and they took a little bit of the momentum away from us." Weber scored the games first goal at 15:53 of the opening period. With the Predators on the power play, Seth Jones broke up a short-handed scoring opportunity by Winnipegs Evander Kane. Nashville went the other way and Weber beat Pavelec with a wrist shot to the stick side from the high slot. The Jets got even at 13:49 of the second on Pelusos first career goal. From the right side, Peluso carried the puck behind the Nashville goal and his wraparound attempt just crossed the goal line before Carter Huttons stick knocked the puck back out of the crease. The play was initially ruled no goal on the ice, but a quick video review showed that the puck did cross the goal line completely. "The game for me was played in pockets of consistency and inconsistency," Winnipeg coach Claude Noel said. "We started out the first 10 minutes; I thought we were really solid then. From there we werent able to sustain some of the stuff we were doing. The biggest task for our team is to be consistent through the whole 60 minutes." Carter Hutton won his second game against the Jets in the past week. He led Nashville to a 3-1 victory Sunday night in Winnipeg, his first career win. He will be busy over the course of the next month, as Rinne, Nashvilles top goaltender, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday afternoon to clear up an infection in his left hip, the same hip he had surgery on following the conclusion of last season. "I am just taking it day-by-day, shot-by-shot, period-by-period, kind of slow things down," Hutton said. "You look at the big picture, it can be a bit overwhelming, especially Ive only played a couple of games." Thursdays procedure will keep Rinne out of the Nashville lineup for at least four weeks. Mancuso stayed true to her reputation as a skier who rises to the occasion in big events, crossing nearly a half-second faster than all other competitors in the downhill run at Rosa Khutor. Mancusos time was one minute, 42.68 seconds. The Reno, Nev., native has three career Olympic medals, including a silver in the super-combi at the Vancouver Olympics. The 29-year-old has struggled this season, with her last World Cup podium in March 2013, . She will now hope to fend off skiers who are better in the slalom, in a run that will take place at 6 a.m. ET. At the very least, shes laid claim to top contender status for Wednesdays downhill. She has four top 5 finishes in the slalom within the past year, and will need that kind of performance in the second run and some breaks elsewhere to be a factor. ANAHEIM, Calif. Mason Rudolph Jersey . -- Although the Anaheim Ducks are running short on chances to prove theyre more than just a regular-season power, they didnt seem daunted before they headed out on a 30-mile road trip that could define their year. After the best regular season in franchise history, the Ducks have lost four of their past six playoff games heading into a critical Game 3 at Los Angeles on Thursday night. Its barely a slump, and it includes a near-victory that got away with 7 seconds left in regulation in the second-round opener. Yet the Ducks realize what hangs on their latest trip to Staples Center, and theyre comfortable with the risk. "The belief and the confidence in this group is pretty high," Anaheim defenceman Cam Fowler said. "We know that a lot of people are counting us out right now, but that only fuels us." During their best stretches of that remarkable regular season, the Ducks were a dominant offensive team, finishing second in the NHL with 266 goals. With Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry leading the way, Anaheim got consistent scoring from all four lines and methodically broke down almost any defensive team -- including the Kings, who beat the Ducks just once in five tries during the regular season. In the playoffs, Anaheim has managed just three goals against Jonathan Quick in two home losses. The Kings puck-possession style and mistake-free play in their own end are remarkable at times, and even the Ducks appreciated it while spending the past two days figuring out ways to counter it. "They certainly know how to win," Fowler said. "Their style translates well to playoff hockey. Very structured, no mistakes, and make the other team beat you. "Theyve done it before, and when Quick starts playing like he is now, thats when they become a hard team to beat. Theyre certainly peaking at the right time, and we know what were up against, but we have a belief in our group that we can do it." The Ducks have made some unique travel arrangements for the nominal road portion of this series. After Wednesdays practice, they took a bus to a hotel across the street from Staples Center. Theyre staying downtown until Game 4 on Saturday, but theyll also take the bus back to Anaheim for practice on Friday. With just three goals in more than six playoff periods against the Kings, Anaheim might attempt to boost its offence by putting Kyle Palmieri back into the lineup. The goal-scoring wing, a healthy scratch in the Ducks past four games, skated alongside Nick Bonino and Devante Smith-Pelly at practice Wednesday. Palmieri scored a career-best 14 goals in the regular season, and he had five points in last seasons first-round series loss to Detroit. The Kings are up 2-0 in a playoff series for the sixth time in the past three seasons, reaching that mark as the road team an incredible five times. They led all four series 3-0 despite opening on the road each time during their 2012 rampage through the post-season to their first Stanley Cup title. The Kings also were down 0-3 in the first round last month against San Jose, which means they realize theyre only nominally in control of this series. "A 2-0 lead is great, but its not four. We know that better than anybody," Kings centre Jarret Stoll said. "Theyve outchanced us. Theyve beaten us in a lot of areas we need to be better at." The Kings are likely to be without injured defencemen Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr again in Game 3, but Matt Greene and Jeff Schultz have filled in splendidly so far. Even with Quick on top of his game, the Ducks are confident they can get back in the series by getting more pucks past him. They hope to have the support of travelling Anaheim fans after the Kings had a boisterous cheering section at Honda Center, too. "We played pretty well in the first two games, and we remind ourselves of that," Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller said. "I dont think many things need to change. We just need to keep our confidence." Its cozy confines create an awkward dynamic in which players navigate their way around pillars, couches and assembled media. Its also difficult for coaches and their protégés to find a place to chat away from the watchful eyes of onlookers. Such was the case last Wednesday when young outfielder Kevin Pillar was spotted sitting with hitting coach Kevin Seitzer at the latters cramped locker stall. The discussion lasted at least 20 minutes. It was underway when the media horde went into John Gibbons office for the daily pregame briefing and hadnt finished by the time the manager had concluded his daily séance. At the time, Pillar was hitting .143 since his recall from Triple-A Buffalo. He was jumpy in the batters box and routinely going after bad pitches out of the strike zone. "I got in the cage with him, I wanted to talk to him," Pillar told TSN.ca. "I think I had two at-bats against (Felix) Doubront, someone I felt comfortable against, struck out, grounded out and those were my only two at-bats of the game and I was pretty upset that night. I knew I wanted to talk to him." Seitzer approached Pillar in the batting cage and asked him how things were going. Pillar answered truthfully and Seitzer told the 25-year-old to find him later that afternoon. Pillar went to his locker and jotted down a series of notes he wanted to pass on to his coach. "Mostly about how maybe my struggles last year carried over here a little bit," said Pillar. "When I got called up this time I felt super comfortable. I was hitting real well in Triple-A. It was that I was hitting well. I just felt comfortable; I was confident and I knew I was ready to come up here this time. I felt like I was starting that downward spiral again of being up here and feeling bad for myself and not understanding why Im not performing and why Im changing things I did down there just because Im in the big leagues." The discussion that ensued revolved around Pillars approach. He needed to get back to being aggressive early in the count. If he got the pitch he was looking for, give it a rip. Seitzer still holds the piece of paper Pillar gave him. "He told me at some point down the road were going to go back and look at it and well be able to tear it up," said Pillar. "Its been about a week since then. Hopefully its in the past." On the day after the sit down Pillar started as the Jays beat Red Sox ace Jon Lester by a score of 7-2. He went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Including that game, hes 7-for-13 (.538) with two doubles in five games. "When Im ready to hit from pitch one then I start getting my timing down, I start seeing the fastball, I start recognizing the breaking balls that are up in the zone, the good ones to hit," said Pillar. "When Im passive up there is when I start second-guessing, Im not really seeing the ball, Imm swinging before I recognize what pitch it is. James Washington Steelers Jersey. " Pillar has been the right-handed half of an effective platoon with Anthony Gose. The two have provided offence and plus-defence in the absence of Colby Rasmus, whos been on the disabled list since May 13 with right hamstring tightness. NAVARRO PLAYING IN PAIN Dioner Navarro was back in the starting lineup less than 24 hours after suffering a bruised left index finger. He was hurt in the fifth inning of Tuesday nights win over the Rays when Jose Molinas bat smacked Navarros hand on a follow through. "I missed a few days with the quad thing and I cant be sitting here and watching the game," said Navarro. "I tested it this morning and I feel good enough and I let them know I was ready to play today." Navarro keeps a bat in his apartment and took some dry swings before coming to the ballpark. He wore a splint for the remainder of Tuesdays game, which forced him to swing the bat with the injured finger straightened out. "I just love to play, man," said Navarro. "I love to play. I kind of put myself in the situation where I want to be again, you know playing after being a back up the last three years and now Ive got this opportunity and its been such a wonderful experience being around these guys." SETBACK FOR SANTOS? Reliever Sergio Santos, on the disabled list since May 10 with a right forearm strain, wont throw from flat ground again until possibly Sunday after experiencing a problem during his Tuesday session. Santos and his skipper describe the issue differently. "It got a little tender," said manager John Gibbons. "So we backed him off a bit. Thats a little bit of a setback." "I wouldnt call it a big, big setback," said Santos. "When I got out to 110 (feet) just stepping on it a little bit, didnt hurt, wasnt painful, just backing off for a day, resting it and then throwing again." JANSSEN GETS NIGHT OFF Closer Casey Janssen has appeared in nine games in 17 days since his return from a strained oblique. He missed most of spring training with stiffness in the back of his pitching shoulder and then injured his oblique on March 28 in Montreal. With the Blue Jays winning almost everyday, hes been called upon more than expected and was feeling sore on Wednesday morning. He wasnt available for Wednesday nights game. "Just sore, general soreness," said Janssen. "Got back and ran the gauntlet a little bit here. Just going to try to steal a day here; hopefully they dont need it and anyway the guys down there can do my job anyway." This isnt the first time Janssen has been unavailable since his return. He appeared in back to back games on May 20-21 and wouldnt have pitched under any circumstance on May 22. He then appeared in the game on May 23 and wasnt available on May 24. Janssen is converted each of the eight save opportunities hes had this season.
